Jordyn Paige Cox/Conner, 19 of Berea, Kentucky died Monday, April 21, 2014 at the Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born August 17, 1994 in Bellaire, Ohio a daughter of Kimberly Conner Fonner and Larry A. Cox, Jr.

Jordyn was a member of the Victory Life Church in Georgetown, Kentucky and attended Eastern Kentucky University.

She formed “Jordyn’s Jems”, an outreach program for the kids at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. On Saturday, she was able to carry out one last wish. Jordyn gave out 100 Easter baskets to other children at the hospital with the help of her church members and friends.

Jordyn was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Mary Conner, her paternal grandfather, Larry A. Cox, Sr. and her paternal step grandfather, Carl J. Hupp, Jr., uncles, Daniel P. Conner and Gregory Mark Harrell and (more…)

Berea Teen Dies After Carrying Out One Last Wish

Jordyn Conner 19, from Berea, KY passed away April 21st at the UK Childrens Hospital after fighting cancer since July 2011.

It started when Jordyn was 16, what she thought, was a kidney infection turned out to be neuroblastoma (bone cancer). As debilitating as her illness was, it did not stop her from forming “Jordyn’s Jem’s” an outreach for the kids at Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

With help from her family and friends Jordyn fought to hang on til Saturday, April 20 to give out a 100 Easter baskets to other children at the hospital and in her community through her program.

Edna was a homemaker and a member of the Owsley Fork Baptist Church. Edna is the daughter of the late Grover and Liza Johnson Cates, and she was preceded in death by her husband, her son Phillip Keith VanWinkle, and her siblings Cecil Cates, Oscar Cates, Edker Cates, Russell Cates, Emma Gadd, Lucy Alexander, Valerie Kilburn, Lottie Alexander, Opal Sparks, and infant Beulah Cates.

Birchel Fields age 96 of Scaffold Cane in Berea, passed away Saturday April 12, 2014 at Berea Health Care Center. Birchel was born in Perry County, Kentucky to the late Slaney and Stella Caudill Fields.

He was a self-employed saw mill worker and a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Chapel Pratt Fields, five children, two brothers and three sisters.

Leola Hughes Cox, age 84, passed away April 2, 2014 at Berea Health Care Center in Berea, Ky. Leola was born in Owsley County on April 24, 1929. She was the loving wife of Philip Cox and the daughter of the late M.C.”Bud” and Mattie Hughes. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Billie Hughes.

Leola is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Philip Cox of Berea, Ky. and her daughter Teresa Boggs, (Tony) and her granddaughter Elizabeth Lee Boggs of McKee,Ky.

Nadia was a 5th grader at Berea Community Elementary School where she was involved with many activities including Pirate 21, and Nadia was also a member of the Crossroads Fellowship Church in Berea where she enjoyed Sports Blast Camp.

Dr. Truett Ricks,78, retired dean of the College of Law Enforcement (now the College of Justice and Safety) at Eastern Kentucky University for more than 14 years, died peacefully at the VA Hospital in Lexington on March 18, 2014.

He was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church, the Oleika Shrine and was a 50-year Mason.

Prior to becoming dean, Dr. Ricks served as an associate dean and professor at the University. Dr. Ricks served as a member of the Kentucky Crime Commission and the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, serving as the chair for the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, and as chair of its curriculum (more…)

Michael G. Williams age 63 of Berea, died Wednesday March 12, 2014 as a result of an accident. Michael is survived by his wife Rita Diane Holcomb Williams, he was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Christine Wagner Williams, and an infant child Michael D. Williams.

He is survived by his siblings Lyric Stephens, Eian DePew and Dakota Smith, paternal grandmother Debbie Smith, paternal grandfather Ronny Winn and paternal grandmother Tiffany King. He is also survived by special aunts and uncles Greg Neeley, Tuasha Smith, Kris Christoffel, Tyler King, Ronnie Winn Jr. and Cheyanne Winn.

Charles Duane “Bob” Johnson, 84, passed away Friday February 28, 2014, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer and several complications. Bob was born January 6, 1927, in East Point, Kentucky, the son of the late John and Priscilla Greer Johnson. Charles became known as Bob as a toddler when an aunt referred to him as “Little Bo Bo,” and the name stuck as Bob.

He was a graduate of Floyd County High School in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. In 1944, he left the Eastern Kentucky mountains to join the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served three years in WWII on a gunboat in the South Pacific, including the battle of Okinawa.

After an honorable discharge, Bob returned to Kentucky, attended Morehead State University and then began a career in sales and management for (more…)

She was born in Rockcastle County on February 25, 1936, daughter of the late Ed and Geneva Proctor Allen, homemaker, member of the Baptist Faith, and had been a resident of Rockcastle and Madison Counties all her life.

Survivors include 1 son, Eugene (Kay) Chasteen; 2 grandchildren, Tonya Shepherd, Nick Chasteen; 5 great grandchildren, Brydon, Breanna, Brylee, Tanika, Nicholas; 3 siblings, Donald Allen, Timmy Allen, Darlene Parrett; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

She was a graduate of Madison Central High School, where she enjoyed playing softball and volleyball. Meredith received her Bachelor Degree from the University of Kentucky, and was a Recruiter for Insight Global. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richmond.

Ricky Lee Jones, 48, son of John H. Jones and the late Marie W. Jones, formerly of Berea, KY, died Sun. Jan. 19, 2014 at Ephriam McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, KY. Ricky was born May 12, 1965 in Lexington, KY.

He is survived by three sisters, Teresa (Eddie) Hobbs, Danville, KY, Phylllis (Danny) Salyer and Carol (Herschel) Waterman, both of Lexington, KY; four nephews, Michael (Becky) Cuzick, Nicholasville, KY, Mark Cuzick, Danville, KY, Robbie Waterman and Greg Thomopoulos, both of Lexington, KY; two great nephews, Dylan and Jacob Cuzick, both of Nicholasville, KY; one great niece, Meagan Loman, Nicholasville, KY; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 pm Thurs. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Pastor Roy Himes. Entombment will follow in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5-9 pm Wed. at the funeral home.
