James Elmer Shelton was born May 18, 1928 in Laurel County and departed this life Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the St. Joseph Hospital in London, being 86 years of age. He was the son of the late Charlie & Maudie (Angel) Shelton.

He is survived by six children, James Wesley Shelton and his wife Melissa of Annville, James Carl Shelton of Annville, Ailene Smith of McKee, Christine Marshall of McKee, Lillie Mae Smith and her husband Jay of East Bernstadt and Doris Smith and her husband Floyd of Tyner. Harriet Dietrich Freeman Marsh, 87, formally of Helena, MT and Berea, KY died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Telford Terrace in Richmond, KY of old age.

Our Mom was born January 5, 1927 in Lexington, KY, the daughter of Joe Frank Freeman and Lois Dietrich Freeman and sister to Alice Freeman Hills and Caroline Freeman Johnston. She married Dad on December 21, 1949 at her family’s home in Lexington and I don’t think they slept apart by choice for the next 56 years. She attended the University of Kentucky, where she received recognition for outstanding scholarship, was a member of Alpha Xi Delta social sorority and (more…)

Karen Rollins Simpson, 46, died June 21, 2014.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Jean Van Winkle Rollins.

Survivors include: two daughters, Ashley Smith and Kristin Anderson, both of Berea, Ky.; three sisters, Vicki Rollins and Lisa Renfro, both of Richmond, Ky., and Kelly Sproles of Berea, Ky.; a brother, Jerry Moody of Nicholasville, Ky.; four grandchildren, Reagan, Eleanor, Pierce Smith and Marci Anderson. Several nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends also survive.

Alberta Carrier Johnson 93 of Berea died Monday June 23, 2014 at St. Joseph Berea Hospital. Alberta was born in Jackson County, Kentucky to the late Herman and Verdie VanWinkle Carrier.

She attended Cruse Ridge Elementary School in Rockcastle County. She was a homemaker and longtime employee of Parker Seal. She was one of the first 50 employees of Parker Seal in 1951. She was of the Pentecostal faith and a member of the Big Hill Holiness Church.

In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Ralph E.T. Johnson, one son Ralph Johnson Jr., and two infant grandchildren (more…)

Erin Nicole Adams, 7 years old, our beautiful, precious angel, was lost to an accident on Friday, June 20, 2014. Erin was born on March 17, 2007 in Winter Haven, FL.

She was a spunky little girl who loved to sing and dance. Erin was a loving big sister and loved to spend time with her family. She was a student at Garden Springs Elementary School in Lexington.

Survivors include: her mother, Joanna McGuire; father, Timothy Hayden; 6 year old brother, Elijah McGuire; 4 year old brother, Cassius Hayden; and numerous other family members and friends.

Lenoa John “Jay” Boggs Jr. age 46, died Friday, June 13, 2014 at Baptist Health in Lexington. Jay was born in Berea, KY. To the late Lenoa John and Ethel Jean Jenkins Boggs. He was the arena changeover coordinator for Rupp Arena and loved sports and motorcycles.

Jay is survived by his wife, Jennifer Burton Boggs, his daughter, Jayla Boggs both of Richmond, KY. His sisters, Brenda Boggs, Hattie (Leon) Bennett and Chandra Lynne Boggs all of Berea, KY, his uncle, Phil Jenkins also of Berea, KY, along with a host of friends and family.

Other than his parents Jay was preceded in death by a sister, Trinia Boggs Spurlin.

Laura Mae Winn, age 15, died Monday, June 9, 2014, at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Lexington on November 6, 1996 to Lorraine Roark and Terry Winn. Laura had just completed eight grade at Southern Middle School where she played in the band. She enjoyed tennis and loved to attend the Indian Summer Camp. For the past five years she has participated in Dance Blue to raise money for the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology units at the Children’s Hospital. Frank Thurman Waterhouse, 53, of Somerset, (formerly of Berea) died Friday, May 30, 2014 at Bluegrass Oakwood where he was a resident. He was a Portland, Maine native born December 8, 1960, son of the late Shirley Verrill Waterhouse Dean. In prior years, Frank was athletic, enjoyed bowling, and competed in track and field events during the Madison County Special Olympics.

Frank is survived by his sister Pamela Lee Waterhouse of Berea. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his father, Frank A. Waterhouse and 1 sister, Jean Marie Waterhouse.

Wayne Story, 59, of Richmond, passed away Friday, May 30, 2014. He was born in Madison County, Kentucky, on November 30, 1954, the son of the late William and Lillie Dickerson Golden.

He served as a firefighter with the City of Richmond Fire Department for 20 years and was a school bus driver for the Madison County Schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Forces and had attended Grace Chapel Wesleyan Church.

He dearly loved his grandchildren who were everything to him, and he enjoyed fishing.

Donald Kent Lake age 76, went to be with his Lord Jesus on Tuesday May 27, 2014 after his sudden death at St. Joseph Hospital Berea. Donald was born May 16, 1938 in Berea to the late Jake S. and Ella Allen Lake. Donald graduated from Berea High in 1956, attended Berea College, and retired from Parker Seal Berea Plant after 43 years of service.

Donald and his wife of nearly 56 years Lorraine Seals Lake enjoyed camping, traveling, farming, fishing, bluegrass music, and spending time with their grandchildren.

Col. James R. Lile, 66 (Ret., KY ANG), passed away Sunday, May 18, at his home in Frankfort, Ky., after a 15-month battle with cancer. Jim was born January 16, 1948, in Christian County, Ky. He graduated from Christian County High School in 1966 and received his bachelor’s of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1971.

Jim was a leader and mentor in many aspects of the community: state government, church, Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky Association of Transportation Engineers and Commonwealth Credit Union, to name a few.

Willard Alexander Jr. “Bug” age 54 of Berea, died Friday May 16, 2014 at his home. “Bug” was a member of the Pilot Knob Baptist Church and had worked for the Madison County Road Department as well as Alexander’s Gas and Grocery Store. “Bug” was born in Richmond KY to Willard Alexander Sr. and the late Mable Centers Alexander.

“Bug” is survived by his father Willard Alexander Sr., his children: Kevin Alexander and Samantha (Robert) Hayes, his siblings Bill (Frankie) Alexander, Sandy (Danny) Whittemore, Tina (Lonnie) Abney, Pennie (Tim) Centers and several nieces and nephews.

Edith Pearl Smith, known as Pearl Smith, age 93, died at the Hospice of Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, SC on April 30, 2014. The cause was CHF.

Born 22 Sept, 1920, in Euclid, OH, the sixth child of Edgar Arthur Spurr and Goldie Oletta McDonald, she lived in NY until 1929 when the family moved to CA.

Survivors include eight children she had with Sherman Wooton (deceased): Kathy Schaaf of CA, Jane (Norman) Erickson of OR, Pat Wooton of CA, Winston Wooton of SC, Don (Debra) Wooton of NC, John (Etsiko) Wooton of CA, Paul Wooton of CA, and Jan Wooton of MO. She also had two twin chidren with her late husband Harold Smith: Annette (Jim) Freel of KY, and Colleen (Ron) Wilson of SC. She is survived also by 23 grand children and 10 great-grand children. She is preceeded in death by one grand-child, Julie Erickson.

She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Los Angeles, CA, class of 1938. Pearl lived through the accomplishments of her children and (more…)
