Birchel Fields age 96 of Scaffold Cane in Berea, passed away Saturday April 12, 2014 at Berea Health Care Center. Birchel was born in Perry County, Kentucky to the late Slaney and Stella Caudill Fields.

He was a self-employed saw mill worker and a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Chapel Pratt Fields, five children, two brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his six children Trudy (George) Cates, Rita (Boyd) Adams, Earl (Janette) Fields, JoEtta (George) Goodrich, Glenis (Brenda) Fields and Ray (Kim) Fields and one brother Riley Fields. 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Wednesday April 16, 2014 at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Himes officiating. Burial will follow at the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-9 pm at Lakes Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Fields, Emery Fields, Larry Phillips, Larry Goodrich, Orville Lamb, Eddie Todd, Roy Gene Todd and Ray Phillips. Honorary bearer will be Clifton “Sparky” Sparks.

Debbie Miller went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 7, 2014 at Baptist Health in Lexington at the age of 52. She was born in Richmond, Kentucky to Raymond J. Carter who died on September 30, 2013 and Beulah Anglin Carter who survives and lives in Berea. An employee of KI, she was a Baptist by faith, loved to fish and loved her grandchildren.

Debbie is survived by: her husband, Bill Miller of Berea; her daughter: Heather Lowery of Winchester; her sister, Brenda (Rickie) Ingram of Berea; her brothers, Donnie Carter, Dale (Tina) Carter, and Tracy (Amanda) Carter, all of Berea; her grandchildren, LaKeisha Matthews and Austin Matthews.

Funeral services for Debbie will be 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Gordon Robinson officiating. Burial will be in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Miller, Dustin Wolfe, Robert Abner, Ricky Sparks, Hershel Anglin, and Jason Ingram. Honorary Pallbearers will be L. D. Anglin, Raymond Johnson, Scott Carter, Rickie Ingram, Mason Anglin, and Ewell Hembree.

Joyce Rhodus, 74, passed away Friday morning, April 11, 2014, at her home. She was born March 23, 1940, in Garrard County, Kentucky, to the late Jasper and Mary Stella Moore Prewitt.

Joyce was a graduate of Buckeye High School, class of 1959. She retired from the Madison County Detention Center as a deputy jailer. She loved raising flowers, working puzzles and watching UK basketball.

Survivors include: her son, James Rhodus (Linda); two daughters, Donna Sexton (Roger Whitaker) and Deann Johnson (Paul Cox), all of Richmond; one brother, J.D. Prewitt (Carol) of Lancaster; one sister, Faye Rogers (Bobby) of Lexington; and five grandchildren, Dustin Johnson, Craig Martin, Brian Rhodus, Brandon Rhodus and Jami Rhodus.

She was preceded in death by two sisters: Doris Walton and Anna Frances Turner.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2014, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Bro. Scott Guiley officiating. Burial will follow in Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be: Billy Collins, Johny Collins, Jamie Wynn, Jeff Puckett, Doug Thomas and Noland Winkler Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: Jerry Casey, Doug Owens, Bill Jessie, Faye Winkler and Ron Devere.

Neccolus Lamar Mundy, 31, son of Vertina N. Mundy and Ronald D. Bronston, died unexpectedly April 7, 2014, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

His funeral is 1 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Saint Paul AME Church, 437 Francis St., Richmond. Visitation from noon.

Dorreen Baldwin

Dorreen Lynn Gilde Baldwin, age 68, died Friday April 11, 2014 at the Hospice Care Center in Richmond. Mrs. Baldwin was a native of Tampa, FL., born to the late Dorr and Geraldine Rickard Gilde.

She is a member of Christian Reform Church and attended the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Mrs. Baldwin enjoyed reading and bird watching but most of all baking cookies with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, James L. Baldwin of Berea, KY; her children: Gregg (Heidi) Baldwin of Tustin, MI., Dr. Eric (Gina) Baldwin of Richmond, KY., and Lisa (Garry) Gay of Berea, KY.; one brother, John (Denise) Gilde of McBain, MI. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by one sister Jerri Gilde.

Services will be Monday, April 14, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Curt Gardner officiating at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in Reeder Township Cemetery in Lake City, Michigan.

Paul Ray Combs, 59, of Berea, KY, and formerly of Dayton & Columbus OH, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, KY. He was born Saturday, August 7, 1954 in Detroit, MI to the late Thornton and Fannie Kelley Combs. He married Anita Gitzinger Combs on October 28, 1994. Paul worked as a computer specialist for the federal government before retiring from there. He was a US Navy Veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era. Paul was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Richmond, KY. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and working in his yard.

Along with his wife, he is survived by one son, Erik (Jodi) Zambell of Long Island, NY; five daughters, Kim Zambell of Sanford, FL, Robin Cooper of Virginia Beach, VA, Keri (Charles) Clabaugh of South Park, CO, Nicole Stewart of Mississippi and Kelsey Dusharm of Auburn, NY; four sisters, Mary Ann (Ronald) Barnett of Waynesburg, KY, Lura M. Combs of Stanford, KY, Loretta (Jerry) Brock of Stanford, KY and Ruth (John) Reinhardt of Carmel IN; thirteen grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; and special friends, Chris & Kathie Ridge of Berea, KY.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00AM at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Double Springs Cemetery with full military Honors performed by the Caswell-Saufley Post #18 of the American Legion. Visitation will take place on Friday, April 11, 2014 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Burlin William “Bill” McKinney, 80, of Big Hill Road, Berea, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at his home. He was born August 4, 1933, in Jackson County, Kentucky, to Eunice and Rosie Clemmons McKinney, both of whom preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by: his wife, Laura McKinney; one grandchild and three brothers, Harlan, James and Orville McKinney.

Bill was a retired farmer and a painter for Berea College and was a member of Sinking Valley Holiness Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Brenda Jones (Jerry), of Berea and Linda Gray, (James) of Red Lick; three sisters, Elsie Harrison, Bessie Rose and Betty Isaacs; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Leonard Wilder officiating. Burial will follow in the Sinking Valley Cemetery of Jackson County. Visitation will be from noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Arlie Vanwinkle age 66, husband of Barbara Young VanWinkle, died Wednesday April 9, 2014 at his home near Big Hill KY. Arlie was born to the late Rev. Virgil VanWinkle and Elizabeth Bessie Hatfield VanWinkle, he was also preceded in death by his siblings Maxine VanWinkle, Eugene VanWinkle, and Arthur Lee VanWinkle.

Arlie was retired as the Produce Manager at Superior Food Market in Berea, and was the organizer for the Bluegrass Mountain Festival from 1990 – 1997.

Arlie is survived by his wife Barbara VanWinkle of McKee, and two sons Donovan (Debbie) VanWinkle of Jessamine County KY, and Heath (Melissa) VanWinkle of Greeneville TN. He is also survived by his siblings Mae Chasteen, Jay (Lois) VanWinkle, Stanley (Penny) VanWinkle, and Joyce (Bobby) Hazelwood, and grandchildren: Soctoria House, Cammyle VanWinkle, Maggie VanWinkle, Braxton VanWinkle, and step-granddaughter Abbi Stubbs, and great-grandsons Bentley House and Brycn House.

Funeral services will be Friday April 11, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Lakes Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Long officiating, burial will be in the Cox Cemetery at Morrill KY. Visitation will be Friday from 11 am – 1:00 pm at the Funeral Home.

William Donald Vennberg

William Donald Vennberg, 73, of Nicholasville, KY, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at University of Kentucky Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. He was born January 6, 1941, in Providence, Rhode Island, to the late William Emanuel Vennberg and Helen Hunter Johnson Cassie Vennberg. He served in the US Navy and was a retired concrete contractor.

Survivors include two daughters, Kristen Conlin (Christopher) of Massachusetts and Laura Moore (Albert) of Richmond; two grandchildren, Crystal Adams and Samantha Vennberg, and one brother, Bobby Vennberg of Rhode Island.

Memorial Services and interment will be held at a later date.

Pleas Wise

Pleas Wise, age 87 of Mt. Vernon, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. He was born in Loam, Kentucky to the late George and Maranda (Sis) Carpenter Wise. A farmer, he was of the Pentecostal faith and was a Navy Veteran of World War II and an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Wise is survived by: his nieces and nephews, Carolyn Tompkins, Randa Rice, Michelle Spencer, Sharon Wise, Starann Wise, Billy Rice, Sherman Bowles, Henry Bowles, Russell Bowles, Mike Wise, Ronald Johnson; sister-in-law, Evelyn Wise. Several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Wise will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home with Bro. Jack Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow in the Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour on Thursday.

Susie Frances Cosby, 77, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, at the Hospice Compassionate Center of Richmond. She was born October 30, 1936, in Garrard County to Lemul Brown Church and Florence Mason Church, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a retired employee of Walmart and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband, John Cosby; one son, Marvin Cosby, of Richmond; two daughters, Donna Lavon Lamb, and Mae Florence Wilburn and husband, Danny, both of Garrard County; one stepdaughter, Darla Cosby; two grandchildren, Angela Webb and husband, Greg, and Chasity Muse and husband, David. She also leaves six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cosby will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Larry Raines officiating. Burial will follow in Madison County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell.

David Nicholas Cosby

David Nicholas Cosby, 29, of Lexington, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014. He was born in Madison County on July 20, 1984.

He was a 2002 graduate of Madison Central High School and was employed by Elite Pest Control. Nicholas was attending The Bridge Church in Lexington.

He is survived by: his father, David Wells Cosby, of Richmond; his mother, Linda Leszczynski Morris and husband, Robert, of Lexington; his fiancée, Ashley Cornett; his brother, Michael Len Hicks and wife, Helen; his paternal grandmother, Kathryn Cosby; his maternal grandmother, Loretta Leszczynski; and two nephews, Braxton and Bryson Hicks.

Ashley is expecting their first child, Christian Nicholas Wells Cosby, in June.

He was preceded in death by: his paternal grandfather, Billy Wells Cosby, and maternal grandfather, Leonard Leszczynski.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Shirley officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Thursday until service time at the funeral home.

Robert Lee Holman, 80, of Richmond, Ky., passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Baptist Health Richmond. He was the son of the late Ira Lee Holman and Nannie Mae Carpenter. He was of the Holiness faith, loved playing music, singing and going to church.

He is survived by: his children, Terry (Pam) Holman, Dale (Brenda) Holman, Carolyn Fontaine, Beverly (Ronnie) Sparks and Ray Owens; and stepchildren, Regina Weaver, Tina Nester, Tammy Abner, Bennie Jones, Stevie Jones and Sonny Jones. He also leaves 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by several brothers and sisters: Thelma Jean Rammage, J.C. Holman, Delbert Saylor, Paul Saylor, Michael Holman, Betty House, Nora Ann Davidson, Loretta McCray and Faye Holman. And he had several stepbrothers and stepsisters.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Cressie Saylor Holman; brothers Sterling Holman, Joe Saylor, Roger Saylor and Bill Holman; a grandchild, Jimmy Holman; a great-grandchild, Landon Gregory; and stepchildren Pam, Lonnie and Cynthia.

Mabel Collins Tribble, 77, of Kirksville, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Compassionate Care Center. Mrs. Tribble was born December 6, 1936, in Madison County to the late Allen C. and Christine Marshall Collins.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed caring for her family, especially her grandsons. She was a member of the Kirksville Baptist Church.

On August 19, 1960, she united in marriage to James Duddley Tribble Jr. who preceded her in death on July 7, 2011, after 50 years of marriage.

She is survived by: her son, Kenneth Allen Tribble of Chester, Virginia; her daughter, Valery Agee and husband Wayne of Kirksville; three brothers, Tobe Collins, Tony Collins and wife Debbie, and Jimmy Collins and wife Ada; two sisters, Stella Hopper and husband Allen, and Ruth Richardson and husband Sherman; and two grandsons, Garnett Wayne Agee II and wife Tiffany, and James Allen Agee.

Mrs. Tribble also was preceded in death by: a brother, Melvin Collins, and three sisters, Beulah Powell, Lillie Hoskins and Rose Schroedel.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronnie “Butch” Pennington officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Timothy “Tim” Rufus Wheat, 49 of Mt. Vernon, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Tim was born on September 19, 1964 in Madison Co., KY the son the late Benjamin “Rufus” Wheat and Mattie Ruth Rimell Wheat of Mt. Vernon.

Tim was a faithful member of Chestnut Ridge Church of Christ. Tim lived in Mt. Vernon, KY all of his life. He attended school in Rockcastle County and graduated in 1982. He worked at Bypass Auto Parts for several years. He then worked as a custodian at EKU for several years and finally worked at RTEC for 13 years until being diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2011.

In his younger years he enjoyed dancing. He enjoyed raising horses, horse riding, horse trading and going to horse sales. He enjoyed anything to do with a horse. He enjoyed doing mechanic work on vehicles, lawn mowers and weed eaters. He enjoyed collecting and trading knives and guns. He enjoyed music being played on instruments. He enjoyed family get togethers especially the food involved. He enjoyed being outside and pittling and his German Shepherd dogs. Above all these things he enjoyed the fellowship he had with his brothers and sisters in Christ. The music that will be played at Tim’s funeral is a collection of his favorite songs.

Tim is survived by his wife of 20 years: Jeanette Martin Wheat and his two children: William Timothy Wheat age 19 and Kimberley Anette Wheat age 14, all of Mt. Vernon, KY.

Tim is also survived by his mother: Mattie Ruth Rimell Wheat of Mt. Vernon and eight siblings: Barbara Reppert and her children: Amanda and Benjamin of Berea, Lavania McNew (Dale) and children: Heather Schill and Johnna Caudill of Berea, Paul Wheat (Debbie) and child: Becky of Berea, James Wheat (Gail) and children: Jamey, Maranda and Sam of Berea, Marvin Wheat of Mt. Vernon, Bert Wheat (Doris) and children: Barb, Sandra Jo, Anna and Jaime of Waco, Brenda White (Mike) of Berea and Connie Bullen (Jr.) of Mt. Vernon. Also surviving are many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, in-laws, many friends and neighbors. In addition to his father: Rufus Wheat.

Tim was preceded in death by a nephew: Matthew Wheat and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Visitation Thursday, will be held April 10, 2014 5-9 PM Dowell & Martin Funeral Home. Funeral services are Friday, April 11, 2014 2 PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Cresthaven Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Glenna Adams Houston, 72 of Mt. Vernon, died Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She was born in Rockcastle Co., KY on March 21, 1942 the daughter of Robert Earl and Leoma Abney Adams. She was a retired factory worker for Duro Paper Bag Company in Florence, KY and of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Charles Houston; one daughter: Jennifer Kincaid of Fort Thomas, KY; two grandsons: Zachary Wofford and jared Wofford both of Covington, KY; one brother: William Franklin Adams of Mt. Vernon; four step children: Bill & Billie Houston of Fort Thomas, Brent & Carla Houston of Fairfield, OH, Barry & Missy Houston of Loveland, OH and Karen & Gary Nickell of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers: Edgar Adams and Junior Adams and three sisters: Edna Adams, Barbara Jean Smith and Jalie Ruth VanWinkle.

Mrs. Geraldine Ruth Thomas, 61 of Livingston, died Saturday, Apr. 5, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She was born in Mt. Vernon, KY on June 4, 1952 the daughter of Burgess and Nellie Jones King.

She was a cook and a member of the Sand Hill Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors, her many animals, and spending as much time as possible with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Billy Thomas; her seven children, Janet Simpson and husband Donavan of Crab Orchard, Rodney Thomas and Phillip Thomas, both of Livingston, Randy Thomas and wife Jessica of London, Mark Thomas and wife Jennie and Greg Thomas and wife Melinda, all of Mt. Vernon, and Cortney Thomas and Chris Settles of Brodhead; three brothers, James King and wife Bessie, Estill Ray King and wife Trenda, and Carl Randall King; five sisters, Easter Loyoff and husband Voyd, Carolyn Russell and husband Coleman, Darlene Deatherage and husband Rodney, Vicky Lavely and husband Larry, and Raven Nora King; 12 grandchildren, Rachel Griffith and husband C.J., Jonathan Simpson, Heather Thomas, Brittany Thomas, Brandon Thomas, Hannah Thomas, April Montjoy, Whitney Thomas, Caleb Thomas, Michelle Thomas, Logan Thomas, and Harley Newcomb; and one great grandchild, Tyler Kirby. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Melissa Marler; a special friend, Amanda Bussell; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Burgess and Nellie King.

Milly Jane McIntosh Roberts, 96, widow of Robert Apr. 6, 1918 – Apr. 7, 2014 Roberts, passed away Monday, April 7th, 2014 at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Mrs. Roberts was a native of Estill County, a daughter of the late Lusby & Betty Richardson McIntosh. She was a retired employee of General Motors, and a member of the Rice Station Christian Church. She loved traveling, working in her yard, and keeping her cars spotless.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Enatheda McIntosh Melemore, Bessie Brady, Arvin McIntosh, and Lewis McIntosh.

Survivors include her brothers Hayden and Lamon McIntosh, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Paul Arvin, 81, husband of Anna Lois Smith Oct. 3, 1932 – Apr. 5, 2014 Arvin, passed away Saturday, April 5th, 2014 at the Marcum Wallace Hospital. Mr. Arvin was a lifelong resident of Estill County, and had been the pastor at South Irvine Pentecostal Church of God for fifty-two years. He was a son of the late Nathaniel T. and Bertha Mae Richardson Arvin. He was preceded in death by his daughter Charlene Arvin; his grand-daughter Alisha Arvin; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his sons Gary W. (and wife Becky) Arvin, Paul “Bird” (and wife Monica); his daughters
Phyllis (and her late husband Eck) Rawlins, Lois (and husband Randall) Harrison, Wanda (and husband Steve) Elliott, Elaine Duncan, and Brenda (and husband Bill) Aldridge; his brother Beverly Arvin; his sister Alice Lynch; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Daymon H. Isaacs was born October 6, 1951 in Madison County and departed this life Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, being 62 years of age. He was the son of the late Snowden & Lizzie (Gabbard) Isaacs.

Daymon is survived by his son, Daniel Isaacs of McKee and by four sisters, Naomi Slone of McKee, Berdina Walker, Diane Isaacs and Colleen Foster all of Richmond. He was blessed with a grandson, Hunter Isaacs of McKee.

In addition to his parents, Daymon was also preceded in death by his sister, Niokah Gay.

Daymon was of the Baptist Faith.

Leatrice Isaacs, better known as Leah, was born November 7, 1949 in Clay County and departed this life Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Nicholas County Hospital in Carlisle, being 64 years of age. She was the daughter of the late Elbert McQueen and Francis Gabbard.

Leah is survived by her husband, Luther Isaacs of McKee and by two sons, George Isaacs and his wife Jane of Chicago, Illinois and Ronald Isaacs of Richmond. She is also survived by two sisters, Marlene Isaacs and her husband Lonnie of McKee and Wavelene McQueen of Richmond; three half brothers, Michael McQueen of Annville, Doyle Fowler of Morehead and Danny Freeman of Lexington and by five half sisters, Jonell Apple of Louisville, Patsy Brown and her husband Charlie, Sandra Hunter and her husband Tony, Grace Ann Fowler and her husband Randy and Paula Marcum all of McKee. Leah was blessed with 4 grandchildren.

Lucille (Clemmons) Morris was born December 26, 1921 in Jackson County and departed this life April 8, 2014 at the Berea Health Care Center, being 92 years of age. She was the daughter of the late John & Molly (Roberts) Clemmons.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 75 years, Bennie Morris of McKee. She is also survived by one son, Earl Morris and his wife Wilda of Berea and by one sister, Ora Caldwell of Alexandria. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Lucille was also preceded in death by three sons, Earin, Freddie and Bartie Morris and also by two brothers and two sisters.

Lucille was a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church.

Charles Duane “Bob” Johnson, 84, passed away Friday February 28, 2014, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer and several complications. Bob was born January 6, 1927, in East Point, Kentucky, the son of the late John and Priscilla Greer Johnson. Charles became known as Bob as a toddler when an aunt referred to him as “Little Bo Bo,” and the name stuck as Bob.

He was a graduate of Floyd County High School in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. In 1944, he left the Eastern Kentucky mountains to join the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served three years in WWII on a gunboat in the South Pacific, including the battle of Okinawa.

Charlie was the owner of Independent Service Garage in Richmond, Kentucky and he helped organized the first Madison County Rescue Squad, he worked endlessly during the 1974 tornado that struck Madison County and he had a great love of cats, caring for many homeless stray cats. Capt. Charles “Charlie” Stiles, the long time chief officer of the Madison County Rescue Squad, Inc. and a dear friend to many both in public safety and in the community, passed away quietly at about 10:45 AM this morning at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond after a brief illness. His passing was due to complications from two substantial heart attacks that he suffered in late December.

Capt. Stiles, who was 85, was involved in organizing the Squad in 1974 and was a charter member when the Squad was officially chartered in July, 1975. He served continuously as an active member of the Squad, maintaining a perfect attendance record at meetings for almost his entire career and being honored on the occasion of his 80th birthday by various organizations as the oldest serving rescue squad officer in Kentucky — a distinction that he maintained until his passing.
