Jerry Ray Combs

Jerry Ray Combs, age 61, died Monday, May 20, 2013 at St. Joseph Berea Hospital. Mr. Combs, the current Madison County Sheriff, was born in Berea on June 10, 1951 to Elvin and Betty Usher Combs of Berea who survive him. He worked for many years for the Berea Police Department and was a member of the Church of Christ. He loved to fish, work in his garden and play with his dog Josie.

Mr. Combs is survived by: his wife: Tracy Lynn Brown Combs of Berea; his sons: Eric Combs and Brian Combs (Jennifer) of Berea; his daughter: Tracy Jane Combs of Louisville; his brothers, Larry Combs of Berea, John E. Combs of Richmond; his sisters: Jane Brandenburg (Ray) of Berea; Edie McCreary (Earl) of Rockwood, Tennessee; step-daughter, Bethany Himes of Berea; step-sons, Aaron Himes and Brett Himes of Berea; grandchildren: Anna Combs, Holly Combs, Ryan Combs, Jonathan Collins and Ben Wolfe; great-grandchildren; Isabella Combs, Harper Combs, and Bentley Wolfe.

Funeral services for Mr. Combs will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Church on The Rock with Rev. Kenny Davis and Jack Hall officiating.

Visitation will be from3-9 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow in the Combs Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the Madison County Sheriffs Officers. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Gene Todd, Larry Todd, Ray Brandenburg, Jim Durham, Ron Devere, Whitney Maupin, Robert Puckett, Randy Kates, Mitchell Smith, Lee Roy Brock, Robert Farmer and Rick Brown.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, 135 W. Irvine St., Richmond, KY 40475. Davis & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

It is with a sad heart the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Sheriff Combs.

On Monday, May 20, 2013 at 8:21 p.m. Sheriff Jerry R. Combs, age 61 was found unresponsive at the home of his parents while working outside in the yard.

He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Berea. Sheriff Combs was pronounced deceased at 9:31 p.m. by Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison at St. Joseph Hospital in Berea, Kentucky.

Madison County Chief Deputy, Mike Coyle was quoted “While our hearts are heavy at the loss of our Sheriff and friend, we want the public to know we will continue the mission that Sheriff Jerry R. Combs would have wanted for our community.”

Funeral arrangements are pending. Davis and Powell Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.

Leoma Brandenburg Frost, 85, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, at Compassionate Care Center. She was born February 17, 1928, in Fayette County, Ky., to the late Ethel (Hurst) and Barney Brandenburg and was the widow of C.T. Frost.

Mrs. Frost was a loving mother and grandmother and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by: two sons, Jack Frost (Kathye) of Rock Hill, S.C., and David Frost, Richmond, Ky.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Frost (Tea), Indianapolis, Ind., Mychal Frost (Katie), Rock Hill, S.C., and Alexis Sutherland (Evan), Natalie Frost and Madelyn Frost, all of Lexington, Ky.,; and one great-granddaughter, Harper Jane Sutherland, Lexington, Ky.

Patricia “Tish” Gadd Robbins, age 67, wife of 46 years to Billy J. Robbins, died at her home in Berea on Friday May 03, 2013, after a valiant battle with ovarian cancer.

She was a member of the Clarksville Baptist Church in Richmond. Mrs. Robbins was retired after 33 years of service from the Madison County Schools, for which she had been a cafeteria manager. She started at Silver Creek Elementary School and moved to Foley Middle School when it was built, and after Madison Southern High School was built she ran both cafeterias. Once Shannon Johnson Elementary was built, she requested to work there and retired after her oldest grandson completed the fifth grade.

She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Robbins enjoyed cooking and baking cakes and working in her flowers.

Nashville, Tenn. (April 28, 2013) – George Jones’ funeral will take place on Thursday, May 2nd at The Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee, starting at 10 am and will be open to the public.

“George would have wanted his fans and friends everywhere to be able to come and pay their respects along with his family,” said publicist Kirt Webster.

“Thanks to George’s friends, fans, and loved ones for the outpouring of love at this terrible time,” said Nancy Jones. “I love you all.”

Dr. Sheryl Jo Stephan, 78, of Richmond, Ky., passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Kenwood Health and Rehab in Richmond. Dr. Stephan was born on August 6, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was the daughter of Joseph Ambrose Stephan and Mildred Arnetta Stephan, both of whom preceded her in death.

She received her undergraduate degree at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill., her master’s degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and her doctorate from Indiana University.

She taught in L’Anse, Michigan, for three years and in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, for six years, before coming to Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. She taught there for 30 years in the Parks and Recreation Department before her retirement in 2002.

Sheryl enjoyed hiking and had a great love for the outdoors. She was director of Camp Hitaga in Iowa for several summers. She also was active in the (more…)

Huston Barger Jr., 48, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, in his Richmond, Kentucky, home after a life-long battle with Crohn’s disease.

Huston had a life-long passion for music and was a professional sound engineer. He also was granted the distinction of Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by: his beloved wife, Catherine Elswick Barger; his daughter, Skylar Jordan Barger; his son, Huston “Trey” Barger III; his mother, Connie Anglin Barger. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Huston Barger, who passed away on January 1, 2013.

Dwight Dean Gatwood, 94, of Richmond, Kentucky, died, Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in Richmond. Dwight Dean Gatwood Sr., better known as Dean, was born in Tipton, Ind., on April 15, 1918, to E.J. and Margaret DeLay Gatwood. He was the second of six children.

He graduated from Peabody Demonstration School and received his B.A. in music and art and his M.A. in art from George Peabody College for Teachers. He also did additional graduate study at Ohio State University and New York University.

Dean met the girl of his dreams when his family moved back to Nashville at the end of the Depression. When they arrived in Nashville, their furniture had not yet arrived. His parents remembered that a family that lived on the next street from their house operated a boarding house. It was there that he saw (more…)

Archie Simpson, 82, husband of Valinda Starnes Simpson, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013. Archie was born October, 6, 1930, in Madison County to the late Zeke and Lula Agee Simpson.

He was a retired employee of Sherwin-Williams as well as a life-long farmer. Archie loved animals, especially his dogs. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he achieved the rank of corporal in the U.S. Army.

A 50-year Mason, Archie was a member of the Madison Lodge No. 183, Knights Templar, Grand Royal Arch Masons, Chapter 16, and Grand Council of Kentucky No. 71. He was a member of the Broadway Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jane VanWinkle, age 97 of Mt. Vernon, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Rockcastle Regional Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born in Pulaski County, KY on March 19, 1915 the daughter of Luther and Alice Roberts Gibson.

She was a retired cook for the Rockcastle County School System and a member of First Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Mrs. VanWinkle was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. VanWinkle is survived by two sons Glen VanWinkle and wife Marsha of Mt. Vernon and Alvin VanWinkle and wife Sue of Paint Lick and two daughters Sue Cromer and husband Glen of Mt. Vernon and Brenda Harris and husband Jimmy of Berea.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren Kimberly, Krystal, J.D., Jonathan, Kelli, Ashleigh and Courtney and eleven great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. VanWinkle was preceded in death by her husband Aster VanWinkle; one sister and four brothers.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2013 6-9 PM at Dowell & Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 20, 2013 11 AM at the funeral home with interment following at the Johnetta Cemetery.

William J. Newman, 84, husband of Edna Newman, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Arcadia Cove of Richmond. William was born February 3, 1929, in Hamilton Ohio to the late William and Addie Woods Newman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elzy Lee Newman (brother), and Thelma Isaacs (sister).

He was a member of Viney Fork Baptist Church. William retired from the Bluegrass Army Depot in 1984. He served honorably in the Navy, National Guard, and Army Reserves with over 30 years of service to his country.
